Working from home

There is something called “Work from Home”. I thought how novel was the idea of working from the comfort of your home …wow. But the term has been twisted and turned beyond recognition now. “Work from Home” is now synonym to working from home after office hours, working from home on the weekends , working from home means not be able to spend time with your family.

In most of the organizations in India  , work from home , is the right of the manager. Its like that , that the personal time of the employees is the personal property of the manager. Some people decide to take things in their own hands and not agree to the terms and conditions of the mangers and are loathed for that, but atleast they have a life outside of work.

An interesting conversation with a boss from my last organization: My boss came to me and told me that you have to look into this too. I said OK, these days its quite busy so I will take a look tomorrow. He says,” Well what are you doing after going back to home?” , I say ” I have lot of other things to do when home”. In short , even if I have free time I would not do office work from home everyday, come on I have not sold myself for a fixed sum that I get at the end of the month.

As they say the more you struggle the deeper you go in the quick sand. So work after office hours is like quick sand, the less you struggle the more breathing space you have. So I made up my mind, I need not struggle much when outside office. I have seen it works.
I think you need to take a call on your life, your bosses will never stop exploiting you. You need to take your work life balance in your own hands and learn to live life better. 🙂 So let go off the bonds of working from home or late hours , just let go and you will enjoy life better.

Harley Davidson Motorcycles India has made an exciting announcement which can revolutionize the high power superbike market in India. The two models announced are 883 SuperLow and the 883 Iron – these would be available for booking from January 2011.  The ultra-stylish  883 SuperLow is priced at Rs. 5.5 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi) and the matte black masculine 883 Iron can be yours at Rs. 6.5 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Harley 883 Iron

India is going to be second country after Brazil where Harley Davidson would be assembling their CKDs(Completely knocked down Kits). Harley would import the CKDs from their plants in the US and assemble them in India.

The thing that amazes me most is that why don’t Indian bike manufacturers like Royal Enfield and Bajaj take the competition to the next level as they can easily manufacture a 1500 cc liquid cooled engine available in a local made Indian bike for an affordable amount of approximately 3 lakhs.

2010 was the year of the car manufacturers lining up a slew of new launches in the Indian market and 2011 seems to be the year of the bike manufacturers to spoil the Indian consumer for choice of bikes among the best and the better.

The Harley 883 Superlow

This is a really exciting news for bike enthusiasts who dream about owning high powered bikes, but cannot afford to do so. These two would be the most affordable branded super bikes in India. So get ready to pack your backpacks to start touring across Indian on your brand new tourer cruiser Harleys.

The new Naked beast of a bike from Yamaha is here in India available at an ex-showroom price of Rs 8,70,000 only. This bike is the most powerful naked bike in India and it sure exudes loads of muscle and oomph for the Bike enthusiasts. The bike sports 998cc DOHC 20-valve engine which has been specially tuned to deliver high mid-range punch and massive top-end power.

Other notable features of the bike are an analog tachometer, digital speedometer, dual trip meter, odometer, water temperature and lights for neutral, high beam, low fuel and turn signals. The bike would be available in Black and White colors in India. Probably, this is the Christmas gift from Yamaha to Indian bike enthusiasts. Though its out of reach for a majority of Indian bike consumers but it has carved a niche and that too a first for itself in the ever growing Indian bike scene. With new bikes coming in almost everyday this one cannot be ignored as just another bike. Though, the actual stir in the Indian bike industry is anticipated from the Honda CBR 250, which would be more affordable and light on the pocket of the Indian consumer.

Other major specifications of the bike include:

My Take on meetings

Posted: 14th December 2010 by Aditya Mahajan in Thoughts

I was thinking one fine day that “Do we really can’t live without meetings ?” and introspecting into my past experience I think we do need meetings but as long as they are short and interesting as a mini skirt and not long and boring as a 2 hour college lecture. And the frequency has to be that of fortnightly and not the same as the number of times an average human goes to toilet in 5 hours.
Over the span of 5 years I have come across people with different types of urges of doing a meeting, some who want it more than food , some who want to use these for telling the tales of their lives , some want to sing songs during the meetings, some like to look at the cleavages around the table (if any), some people just do meetings because they have to, and the list continues.
I am thinking of making up a full form of the meetings that happen around me ..hmm…let me think.

M >Meet
E >Everyday
E >Everyweek
T >To
I >Instill
N >Nothing
G >Good

Thats good , I did not expect to come up with such a great definition, but now that I have lets take the discussion further.

We have daily status meetings, then we have daily adhoc susu meetings, pantry meetings, then anytime anywhere meetings and I can ask you anything meetings. I have read in many a article that a man is most relaxed when he shakes hands with his best friend in the toilet, but I have to sometimes change the floor to do so or sometimes have to postpone the enjoyment , just because my manager is doing his thing. I dont like to be enquired about what I have done during the day even during the 5-10 seconds of peace. 🙂 and I have seen this happen quite often especially by the managers who are into quality matters. I have also seen managers being interested in another guy’s (a guy who is not in his team) work if he does not get hold of one of his.
I have never been on the other side, that is , the manager side , maybe doing this (asking while doing the thing) gives them more peace than what an average human gets. 🙂
Then there are meetings which are defined as short and sweet , they are called Scrums, but here the R has been removed from Scrums , they are the meetings that introduce scum in your work life daily. The pseudo-intelligent program manager taking notes and us guys listening to a favorite girl of the manager taking 15 mintues out of the total 30 minutes in telling a status that could have been told in 2 minutes. But you see she is different. :).
Then there are meeting that are after office hours, you have to take through Internet and phone being on mute the whole time, but your boss has to be happy that you are in the meeting. doing nothing but killing his time. I term the after hour meeting that happens with people in the US as the “Master calling Slave meeting “, as the meeting happens at the oddest of hours and you can’t say no to them and you are not credited 1 % for attending that meeting. I feel that the US managers are good at following the meeting schedules, they always start the closing ceremony as soon as the meeting deadline is declared by the clock’s hands, while for the Indian managers the meeting has just started when the meeting has ended, they start getting weird and seemingly intelligent ideas as soon as the deadline ends.

One meeting that is OK is the one in which a team trip is discussed and finalized. The only meeting that interests me is the Appraisal meeting in which I am getting atleast a 25% raise, but alas such a meeting has the probability of happening once in 5 years and in this recession this period has stretched to maybe 7 or 8 years.

My tips to survive a meeting is to either have a laptop with a wifi connection and a battery backup of atleast 2 hours. Or be patient or numb enough to survive the ordeal. God bless all those who have to survive meetings like I have to.

A song that shows clips that underline the power of ‘one’ to change the world.Inspiring examples aboud around us who have made this world a much better place through sheer will power.

    Here are the lyrics-
From underneath the trees, we watch the sky
    Confusing stars for satellites
I never dreamed that you’d be mine
But here we are, we’re here tonight

    Singing Amen, I, I’m alive
    Singing Amen, I, I’m alive

    [Chorus:]
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we’d see the day when nobody died

    And I’m singing

    Amen I, Amen I, I’m alive
    Amen I, Amen I, Amen I, I’m alive

And in the air the fireflies
    Our only light in paradise
We’ll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along

    Singing Amen, I, I’m alive
    Singing Amen, I, I’m alive
    (I’m alive)

    [Chorus x2]

And as we lie beneath the stars
We realize how small we are
If they could love like you and me
Imagine what the world could be

If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we’d see the day when nobody died
    When nobody died…

    [Chorus]

We’d see the day, we’d see the day
    When nobody died
We’d see the day, we’d see the day
    When nobody died
We’d see the day when nobody died
