The Retail Snobs

This is a topic I have been itching to write on for a long time now. Its so happens a number of times with a lot of us who have a habit of visiting the shopping malls. These days shopping malls have also been divided into fairly broad categories, my categories for the same are the normal ones (the one which you would normally visit to have food and watch a movie may be) , the good ones (where you would go for a good dinner, a movie and shopping too) and then there are the upscale ones (which house mostly the international brand, most of which are out of reach for a normal day to day Indian shopper). Since there are three categories of malls, now they have three categories of employees too and this where the things take an interesting turn.

The normal malls would have normal employees who would attend to you and take your requests very politely and make you feel good that you visited their shop or showroom. These employees would not use their brains much and just obey what you tell them. The good ones would have a little brainy and smart people and they might be the kinds you feel good to deal with and at times they make you feel pampered while you are shopping at their shops or showrooms. There might be some incident snobs also in shops selling high-end perfumes or sunglasses but the ratio of snobs in these kind of malls is still less compared to what we are coming on with the third kind of malls. Now, lets talk about the third and the most “Ohh the high end type malls”.

You might enter these malls’ parking with a Bentley Continental GT or a BMW Z4 trailing your car for the parking queue. The engine growls of these cars making you envious and jealous at the same time. Once parked in your slot, you head for the lift and things are fine till here. Now, you enter the realm of eliteness and the environment of high-end brands be it in clothing or home decor or lifestyle shops. You can sell mud from your backyard in these kinds of malls, labeling it as special herbal mud (do you think I am joking, try it once, you can easily sell an ounce of mud  at maybe 100Rs an ounce). The main highlight and the point of observation in these malls are the shop employees or retailers as we might call them in the actual terms. You might say to yourself… “Hmm… this looks like a great shop with great collection that might be expensive…. okayy… lets have a look” and voila you are inside the shop and you get a piercing glance from the billdesk guy and he directs a guy/gal standing next to him to assist you. “How may I help you mam/sir” is the question that welcomes you …or sometimes just silence… and you make an eye contact with the visitor and can smile and say “I am having a look around, will let you know when I need your help” or you can just ignore them and keep doing what you are doing. And then starts the observable thing: this guy/gal would then look back at the billdesk and make some subtle gestures with the eyes or the nod of a neck and inform the bill desk that this is a no-no sale or just drift away , thinking that this customer is not going to buy anything. Till this point and behavior things are fine, its human nature afterall , humans cannot hold back without giving feedback in some manner to the anticipating sales manager.

Things get worse if you enter a really high end store, of dresses , home decor or blah shops… The employees here would look at you through their noses probably as they are held very high. I think at times, “Buddy why you are behaving like you own all the stuff in this shop, don’t forget you are just a bloody employee who probably earns lesser than me!!!” and yea this thought is true in most of the cases. A classic example of this happened with a colleague of my wife, she walked into a high-end decor shop called “Lladro” (this shop sells obscenely expensive porcelain figures) and she had to buy stuff from there as a gift for someone in family. The shop retailer walks to her , looking her through the nose. She has a look around and asks for a price of two figurines and gets replied in a very high-headed manner and the prices quoted in a tone having a backdrop: “Lady, you can’t afford this piece of porcelain, its expensive!!!” , she blasted the employee that :” Is this what you are taught in your retail courses and dude you jusk lost a probable customer.” , she goes to another “Lladro” shop and buys herself the same porcelain statue and makes the shop manager to call the snob in the previous shop that she had purchased stuff worth INR 55k. Though this might not have affected the ego of the snob, but the point here is that the retail shop guys/gals must realize a few things: firstly, they don’t own all the stuff in the shop, they are just empoyees. Secondly, do not judge a person’s worth from their appearance, you might be deceiving yourself and letting go an opportunity for a sale. thirdly, they should realize that “Why am I being such a snob?”.

This a topic which might have incidents and occasions that almost every one has experienced expect the “la-cream” gentry of the society. But the lesson learnt is that : “If you park your ass in a shop or place that offers high end goods or services, just don’t look at your customers with your nose” … 🙂

The Tramp

The tramp was striding down the road clutching a newspaper with a spring in his step despite his ragged appearance.Torn clothes and a layer of grime did not deter him from whooping in joy every now and then. The entrance to the park he spent his days in ,loomed ahead. The park bench had been his home for a year or so.If he had washed off the layer of grime and dressed up properly many people would have recognised him.And they would have been shocked to see his present condition. He had been a rich man once.

He had owned a chain of very succesful book stores. He was going to Europe to promote business and have a pleasure trip as well. On reaching London he checked into a hotel. After refreshing himself he arranged a taxi for a sight seeing tour to cover some part of the city. After all he did not want to waste his day. That was when IT happened. The taxi slowed down at a traffic light. And he saw a sight that he could never forget for the rest of his life.He saw Her.

It was not as if she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. But his eyes refused to stop seeing her.His mind told him that he had to be with her to be happy. He had to see her everyday to be truly alive. It felt as if his life had built up to this particular moment in time.In a sort of trance he jumped out of the taxi and the taxi driver’s universally colourful lingo (made so by daily interaction with the mosaic of humanity)came forth bringing him to attention. He paid him much more than the fare. He just went up to her.She seemed shocked at his behaviour. He opened his mouth but only gibberish came out.He controlled himself and said”Will you have dinner with me?”She just blurted out “Er…Yes.” There was a look of astonishment on her face,at her own reply or his audacity he never came to know.

He said a restaurant’s name and she again replied in the affirmative. He felt like a high school kid who asks out a girl for the first time.He wanted to hug all the people walking on the street. He began jumping up and down and stopped only when people started eyeing him warily. He laughed like a crazy man but suddenly he realised that she had only said she will come .She might become nervous and not turn up at all.Still worried he reached the venue half an hour earlier. She was already there. Both of them looked astonished that the other had kept this strange appointment. He had never felt that so much was at stake. He wanted to be entertaining without even risking offending her in anyway. They both started a bit nervously. Then they opened up as if they had known each other their entire lives.

She was an orphan and had just left her job as a receptionist at a hotel. In the course of their conversation they just decided that they would take the Europe trip together. They went to France.Italy.Germany.Spain.They laughed, they fought and before they knew it they were married in a small church on the outskirts of London. They left for New York man and wife.

Life was bliss for a couple of years until it began. She started losing weight and the colour in her cheeks faded away. She became pale and morose. They went to their family doctor who recommended them to a specialist. The specialist did some tests.Telling a patient a bad prognosis is one of the toughest parts of being a doctor, but he told them. The air in the room seemed to have solidified for they could not breathe. She fainted. He sat dumbfounded. ‘The last stages of cancer. Its too late to save her’,the doctor had said in a monotone .His profession made him immune to their pain. But their world just collapsed around them.

The doctor revived her and after asking a few more questions to the doctor, they left. They were walking listlessly to the car park when she stopped him.”Dont think i am being melodramatic or anything but please marry after i die”The withering look he gave her then was the first time she saw him so angry. He did not reply. He did not need to reply. On reaching home he assigned all his assistants to compile the names of all the best specialists and any revolutionary treatment they could discover. The list was compiled and every person on that list was consulted. All the revolutionary techniques applicable were used under the supervision of the best doctors.

Nothing worked. She died 3 months after being diagnosed. He lost interest in business. He lost interest in life as such.4 months later he heard of a small company that had made a breakthrough discovery in cancer chemotherapy. It could revolutionise cancer treatment, unlike those side effects drugs (have you read how many people get victims? visit http://sideeffectsofxarelto.org/xarelto-lawsuits/). He talked to them and asked a specialist to assess their claim. The company needed finance to complete their research and manufacture the drug.Bigger pharmaceutical companies just wanted to wait till the patent lapsed to garner maximum profits. The specialist assured him of their authencity. He could not wait for anyone else to lose a loved one for financial considerations. He sold all his bookstores ,his house, everything he owned. His frieds tried to persuade him to stop but he was a man possesed. He gave the money to the company. The night his house was sold he disappeared .It was eleven months ago.The first night he slept on a park bench. And that was where he was now. The source of his joy an article on a miraculous cancer cure. Then he again became sad for now only one question remained for him -How long before i join her?

Battle for Terra-A review

An animation feature with an important message for the audience. Although considering humans as the aliens takes some getting used to (though after the more recent Avatar phenomenon it’s quite easier to assimilate) but the confrontational instincts of some of our leaders and the disastrous consequences thereof are explained via a world where the lesson of peace has been learnt the hard way and put into practice by a regime that’s peaceful yet demands total conformity(which is an oxymoron in my opinion) .
The movie begins with a sort of highlight reel of the planet Terra and its wonders. The gliders which are used by kids(including Mala and Senn), the flying blue whale like creatures, the quite human exuberance of youth which sometimes brings us pretty close to disaster, all making the aliens quite human in the audience’s viewpoint.

Then human aggression commences and as they capture locals, most of whom consider their aircrafts as gods, one of the attacking aircrafts crashes. The pilot James Stanton is rescued by a local whose father has been kidnapped with the help of Giddy, a robot accompanying James(reminded me of Wall-E but this movie preceded Wall-E). In return she desires to meet her dad. As James comes to he tries to attack Maya. To which Giddy sagely replies he only did this because he was scared, and that human species is scared of a lot of things.

Maya helps him get back to his ship and during this attempt James witnesses the beauty of their culture and their peaceful existence. On the ship James is presented with the dilemma of attacking Terra or condemning his species to possible extinction as the human aircraft is decaying and running out of oxygen. The human general then stages a coup and issues orders for an attack on Terra.

The contrast between the war preparation speeches by the Human general and the Alien elders is quite stark and a deliberate attempt to portray the kind of ideas hawks in government policy(in reality)profess.
What commences is a battle with visuals we have come to expect in sci-fi animated features (although the budget constraints limit them. The result being creditable visuals but nothing as spectacular as Wall-E) and without giving away the conclusion I would just say the triumph of nobility results in the best possible outcome under the given circumstances.

The movies has its share of battle sequences but the philosophical contrast between humans and the alien species and the portrayal of humans being on the verge of extinction as their resources run out lend a philosophical air to the movie. I highly recommend the movie and to those who think it has a similar concept as Avatar, this movie actually came out before Avatar and though visually less spectacular it has a better story and dialogues.

Finally A Beemer to challenge Fortuner’s Fortune

Its official now, the BMW X1 is in India and is going to be available July 2011 onwards. And the great news is that its going to cost approximately 25 lakhs, which is less than the Toyota Fortuner. This market has been currently captured by the muscular 7 seater Fortuner, whereas the X1 is a 5 seater but the allure of a beemer is difficult to resist.

The new compact SUV is going to be imported as CKD (Completely Knocked down) kits and assembled in the BMW Chennai Plant to keep the costs under tab. The SUV is going to have a 2000 cc diesel engine and an 1800 cc petrol engine as choice of its heart. BMW is not posing the X1 as an off-roader but a great looking and comfortable city commuter. BMW’s cars are high on tech and loaded with features and it appeals the tech savvy buyer who wants style and wants make a statement at the same time.

The interiors look great and highly functional as expected from a BMW:

Its already being pitched as best seller in its category by a number of auto enthusiasts, but the excitement is yet now over Audi is also preparing its India assembled Q5 from March 2010.  Lets keep our hopes high for right pricing of new cars to be launched in India. The Indian market is finally being seen as a market of serious and knowledgeable buyers and the days when the buyers only had the choice of buying a Maruti 800, A Premier Padmini and a HM Ambassador are long passe.

The World

This is a poem I wrote around 7 years back from today:

When the Angels dreamed of a world so fine,
The Devil woke up and the clock struck nine…
The Angels designed the world really wise,
But the Devil was a troublemaker in disguise…
The path to destinies was well lit by the torches of wisdom,
The lightning struck and the ground shook;the devil’s time had begun…
The path which was paved with happiness was cracked,
By the sorrows and pain it had been hacked…
For the angels it was a matter of great worry,
Even the devil was in no hurry…
To save the world the angels tried their best,
To the Devil this was sheer zest…
For the angels the fight had just begun,
But the Devil knew there was nowhere to run…
This war has waged for millions of years,
But still the world from its heat sears…
What the angels had dreamed so beautiful and fair,
The Devil turned the cards causing sorrow and despair…
